Tony Tabor
Head Coach
|
|
Coach Tony Tabor enters his
18th season of coaching football and his 5th
season as the head football coach at Desert
Mountain High School. He has been a part of
four Arizona, State championship staffs. Coach
Tabor graduated from Southwest Missouri State
University in Springfield, Missouri, in 1992
with a degree in Marketing/ Management. He played
Fullback and Nose Guard on two Gateway Conference
Championship teams. He was a three year letterman
playing high school football in Perkins, Oklahoma.
Coach Tabor coached at Southwest Missouri State,
Westmoore High School (in Oklahoma City, Ok),
Deer Valley High School and Goldwater High School
before joining the football staff at Chaparral
High School in 1999. At Chaparral, he was part
of three state championships (“99, 00
& 02”) as well as a 28-game winning
streak. Coach Tabor moved to North Canyon High
School in 2005 and was part of a 14-0 5A Division
2 state championship. Coach Tabor was part of
the combined record of 83-10 and four state
championships by Chaparral and North Canyon
while he was an assistant coach with those schools.
Coach Tabor became the head football coach
at Desert Mountain in February 2006. After 3
season of steady improvement, 2009 was a breakout
season. Last year’s team (2009) went 9-4
and advanced to the state semi-finals before
losing to the eventual state champion. The 2009
team set school records in number of wins for
a season (9), play-off wins (2), and advancement
in the state play-offs (3rd round).

Bill Henderson
Offensive
Coordinator |
Coach
Bill Henderson joins the Wolves staff has the
running backs coach after serving has the Offensive
Coordinator and QB coach in 2008 at Glendale
Deer Valley. Henderson brings 19 years of coaching
experience with a career that began at Mesa
Community College in 1990 has the Thunderbirds
running backs coach. In1993 Henderson moved
to Deer Valley working with running backs and
assisting in developing an offense that made
the playoffs 3 years in a row including a 1993
playoff win over then #1 ranked Mesa Dobson.
In 1996 Henderson reunited with former MCC Coach
Jim Ewan as Offensive Coordinator at Glendale
Mountain Ridge building a program and winning
their 1st region title in 1998. Coach Henderson
then headed to Chandler High from 2000-2004
as the Offensive Coordinator helping rebuild
a program that in 1999 had only won 1 game. |
Jerry Rhoades
Defensive Coordinator |
Coach
Jerry Rhoades is entering his fifth year as Defensive
Coordinator for the DMHS varsity and his 18th
year of coaching football overall. Before joining
the DMHS coaching staff, Coach Rhoades was Head
Football Coach for three years at Payson High
School in Payson, Arizona, where he led the team
to a regional championship. Coach Rhoades was
a four-sport letterman at Hayden High School.
He attended Eastern Arizona College, where he
lettered in two sports, including football, before
attending Northern Arizona University. Coach Rhoades
has a Masters degree from NAU and teaches Physical
Education at Cheyenne Middle School. |

Greg Baily
Running Backs |
Coach Greg Bailey joins the Wolves
staff as the running backs coach and after serving
as the Offensive Coordinator of the Sandra Day
O’Connor Freshman in 2009. Coach Bailey
grew up in Phoenix attending Moon Valley High
School and was part of the 1983 state championship
football team. Coach Bailey was a 3-year letterman
in football at Moon Valley High School where he
earned All-Region Honors. Coach Bailey was the
offensive coordinator for Deer Valley’s
Freshman team in 2008. He would like to thank
his wife Alison, children Morgan and Justin for
their support. |

Jeremiah Johnson
Offensive Line |
Coach Johnson starts his first
year at desert mountain. Coach Johnson was a 3
year starter on the offensive line at Legacy High
School in Broomfield, CO. He e then attended Midland
Lutheran College in Fremont, NE where he was a
two year starter at guard. He then transferred
to Mesa State College were he played an additional
year. He then was a GA at Mesa State for two seasons.
He recently graduated from Mesa State with a Bachelors
degree in Sports Management. Coach Johnson would
like to thank his parents and his fiancée
Stephanie for their support. |

Stephen Braue
Defensive Backs
|
Coach Stephen Braue is in his
1stseason as the Cornerbacks coach at DMHS.
Coach Braue was born and raised in Alpharetta,
GA where he graduated from Milton High School
in 2005 and was a three-year letterman in football
and track. He was voted captain of the football
team by his teammates his senior year and was
named the 2005 Athlete of the year at his High
School. Coach Braue continued playing football
at The University of Georgia in Athens, GA during
the 2008 & 2009 seasons, where he played
on special teams and as a back up Corner. Coach
Braue earned his degree in Risk Management and
Insurance and is currently working for the Nautilus
Insurance Group off of Scottsdale road. |

Chris Stavroff
Kicking |
Coach Chris Stavroff is in his
fourth year as the varsity kicking and special
teams coach for DMHS. Coach Stavroff earned his
Bachelor of Science degree from Indiana University
where he was a walk-on place kicker on the Hoosiers
football team. After graduation, he built a successful
career as in commercial real estate and also co-founded
a company that owned and operated several successful
restaurants in Columbus, Ohio. After selling his
company in 2004, Coach Stavroff and his family
moved to Scottsdale. In addition to his coaching
duties at DMHS, Coach Stavroff is working on multi-national
business projects in SE Europe, India, and the
United States. |

VARSITY COACHES |

Vance
Miller is in his third season with the DMHS
Junior Varsity football team. Coach Miller has
eight years of football playing experience,
including high school, and two years of semi-pro
football with the Arizona Football League (AZFL)
and eight years of coaching experience. An Arizona
native, Coach Miller graduated from Scottsdale
Saguaro High School in 1994, where he was the
starting Center on the football team. He also
starred in soccer, track and wrestling at Saguaro.
Coach Miller served as the Defensive Coordinator,
Offensive and Defensive Line Coach for the Saguaro
Freshman team in 1994, and he was a regional
champion head coach for four seasons in the
Scottsdale Pop Warner league. Coach Miller earned
a bachelor’s and Master's degree in Physical
Education from Arizona State University. |

Norm Williams
Defensive
Coordinator

Norman
Williams is in his third year as DMHS Junior Varsity
Defensive Coordinator. Coach Williams has 15 years
of coaching experience which includes high school
and Pop Warner. He has also served as Defensive
Coordinator, Offensive Coordinator, and Special
Teams Head Coach for the Cramer Hill Rockies Football
Organization and was also the Vice-President of
the same organization. Coach Williams was also
the Freshman Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator
for the Woodrow Wilson Tigers in Camden, New Jersey.
This is Coach Williams fifth year assisting Head
Coach Vance Miller as the Defensive Coordinator.
Norman Williams is married with 4 children; 3
boys and 1 girl. |

Jon Saltzman
Defensive Backs &
Special Teams |
Jon Saltzman is in
his second year with Desert Mountain High School
as the JV wide receivers and cornerbacks coach.
Coach Saltzman grew up in St. Louis, Missouri
where he attended Parkway Central High School,
lettering in Varsity football for 2 years. Coach
Saltzman was also a district champion in Varsity
wrestling his freshman and sophomore years while
serving as captain during his sophomore and junior
years, earning 3 Varsity letters. However, injury
prevented him from competing in Districts his
junior year and kept him from wrestling his entire
senior season. Coach Saltzman earned a bachelor’s
degree in Physical Education from Arizona State
University. |

Coach
Chris Fredericks is now in his eighth year as
Head Coach for the DMHS Freshman Football Team.
Coach Fredericks also has served as the Head
Wrestling Coach for DMSH for eleven years. Coach
Fredericks graduated from the University of
Northern Iowa, where he played football for
two years. He received a Masters in Business
Administration from the Keller Graduate School
of Management. Coach Fredericks is a full-time
on-campus teacher at DMHS, where he teaches
U.S. and Arizona history. |

Jeff Harper
Defensive
Coordinator

Coach Harper, is a
Scottsdale native and a 1980 graduate of Chaparral
High where he was the 1979 Scottsdale Progress
Player of the Year. Coach Harper graduated from
Colorado State University with a B.S. in Horticulture
in 1985. While at C.S.U. Coach Harper was a four
year starter and earned Honorable mention All-American,
and All-Conference honors as a Middle Linebacker
for the Ram's in 1982,83. Coach Harper also played
professionally for the Denver Gold, and the Hamilton
Tiger Cats in the U.S.F.L. and the C.F.L. This
will be coach Harper's first year on the Desert
Mountain coaching staff. Previously he coached
Linebackers at Chaparral, and has spent the last
eight years coaching Youth Football in Scottsdale.
Aside from his coaching duties coach Harper owns
and operates his Nursery business in Scottsdale,
and Mesa. |

Vince Rio, Jr.
Offensive Coordinator

Coach
Vince Rio is in his fourth season as freshmen
offensive line coach at DMHS. Coach Rio graduated
from DMHS in 2006, where he was a three-year letterman
in football and earned All Desert Valley Region
honors as a senior. Coach Rio played football
at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon
during 2006-2007, where he started at Left Guard
before returning to Arizona. Coach Rio is currently
attending Scottsdale Community College and plans
to attend ASU and major in Business Finance or
Management. |

Sawyer Merrill Defensive Line |
Coach Sawyer Merrill is in his
first season as freshmen defensive line coach
at DMHS. Coach Merrill graduated from DMHS in
2006, where he was a two-year letterman in football
and a three year lacrosse player as well. Coach
Merrill played college football at California
Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, CA, where
he started at defensive end for 3 years, earning
first team all-conference recognition his junior
year. Coach Merrill is currently a Para-educator
at Desert Mountain in the Special Education program.
Coach Merrill earned a bachelor’s degree
in Exercise Science and Sports Medicine with an
emphasis in education from California Lutheran
University.
